Shortly after 9 p.m. on Wednesday, August 21st, 2019, Citrus County Sheriff Mike Prendergast was involved in a vehicle crash in Hernando County which killed a  pedestrian.

According to a media release, Sheriff Prendergast, 62, was traveling north on U.S. Highway 19 in his unmarked 2017 Chevy Tahoe agency vehicle and was returning home from a board meeting with the Sheriff’s Ranches Enterprises, Inc.

As Sheriff Prendergrast was traveling north on US Hwy 19 just north of Weeki Wachee, 59-year old Ronnie Anthony Heath of Brooksville attempted to cross the roadway and walked into the outside traffic lane. Prendergrast’s vehicle struck Heath who was pronounced deceased at the scene, reports the Florida Highway Patrol.

It is not yet known whether or not Heath was under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

The accident happened on the evening before a scheduled press conference which was to take place this morning to disclose the details of 23 arrests and the closure of at least 5 ongoing investigations carried out by the Citrus County Sheriffs Office Tactical Impact Unit.
