A 22-year-old woman from Crystal River was killed in a late afternoon crash Sunday when a drunk driver ran a stop sign causing a head-on collision.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, Samantha Martinez died from injuries sustained in a head-on crash on Lecanto Highway in Citrus County Sunday afternoon at approximately 4:30 p.m.

Samantha Martinez was driving northbound on County Road 491, as known as Lecanto Highway, in her 2019 Ford Fusion.  

Carl Haun, 57, of Inverness was driving his 2006 Chevrolet pickup truck traveling eastbound on County Road 480, also known as Stage Coach Trail, when he failed to stop at the posted stop sign at the intersection. Troopers say Haun was driving under the influence of alcohol.

As a result of Haun running through the stp sign, Martinez collided head-on with the right front of his vehicle.

Troopers say Martinez was not wearing her seatbelt.

Upon impact, Haun’s 2006 Chevrolet PK rotated, overturned and traveled to final rest along the east shoulder of CR-491. Haun was transported to Bayonet Point Hospital with series injuries.

Samantha Martinez was transported to Bayonet Point Hospital where she died from her injuries.

Charges are pending against Haun.
